Michael Solomon has been a partner in the firm since 1989. In 2004 he was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Maitland Group and was appointed as Chairman in 2009. In 2019 he stepped down as Chairman and was appointed as a non-executive member of the Board.
He is a corporate and commercial lawyer, dealing primarily with public and private cross border mergers and acquisitions, international joint ventures, international tax, corporate finance and general company and commercial matters. Michael also has considerable experience in private client affairs, including tax and trust structures, as well as in dispute resolution.
Although Michael relocated to Monaco from 2 April 2008 to help Maitland establish a new Monaco office, he remains a leading member of the Corporate Commercial Workgroup and continues to work with and lead Maitland teams, particularly those based in the London office, on a number of transactions and matters.
In a career spanning more than 30 years, Michael has led and been involved in many large and small public and private transactions, the largest of which was the approximately $19bn transaction by which De Beers was taken private during 2001.
Michael obtained a Diploma in Law at the University of Witwatersrand followed by Higher Diplomas in Tax Law and Company Law. Michael was admitted as a South African Attorney (1976) and Lesotho Attorney (1980), qualified as solicitor of England and Wales and is a registered Legal Practitioner in the Isle of Man (since 1993).
