Steven joined Maitland in Luxembourg in 1985, after completing his legal studies in South Africa and articles at law firm Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg. In December 1996 he moved to the Paris office where he was based until 2009 when he moved to the London office.
Steven has been a partner in the firm since 1987. In 2006 he was appointed as the CEO of the Maitland group.
Steven has over 30 years’ experience in international tax planning and the structuring of international collective investment funds. He is also actively involved in advising international financial services groups on the location, establishment and regulation of holding companies and collective investment undertakings.
Highlights of Steven’s career include working on the migration of Anglo American Limited and Minorco SA to the UK in 1999; the $19 billion transaction to take De Beers private in 2001; the disposal by Anglo American of its investment in Zambia Copper Investments in 2002 to the Copperbelt Development Foundation; the acquisition by Maitland of FinSource in 2005; and the $5.1 billion agreement with Anglo American plc for the sale of the Oppenheimer family’s 40% interest in De Beers in 2012.
During Steven’s term of office Maitland has grown into a significant multijurisdictional organisation spanning 16 offices in 12 jurisdictions with $250 billion assets under administration. His leadership philosophy is simple – to demonstrate the path through action.
